Dhaulagiri soars 8167m and is the seventh highest peak in the world, standing alone above the great Kaligandaki Valley in central west Nepal. This valley is the deepest on earth as it is flanked by two 8000m peaks Daulagiri I and Annapurna I. This trek offers breathtaking views of Daulagiri’s massive south face as well as the chance to explore the remote valleys hidden away behind its bulk.
You head out through exquisite forests of pine, Rhododendron and fir to emerge on the Kaphe Glacier, from where you climb up and over French Pass 5240m. You descend into the wild and untravelled valleys beyond where bharal ( blue sheep) can sometimes still be seen in summer. The route then takes you over the Thapa La Pass 5250m, with exceptional views of the great Kali Gandaki Gorge, before the steep descend into the valley and the return walk to Pokhara.
This is a most challenging trek but your effort is well rewarded. In three weeks we will circle Dhaulagiri reaching valleys little known to locals let alone foreigners! From Nepal’s middle hills we ascend along the Marsyangdi River through its ever-narrowing valley. Reaching alpine terrain at 3600 m we will find the upper Marsyangdi Glacier surrounded on all side to the east, Dhaulagiri 1 [8167 m], to the west, more of Dhaulagiri’s six ice-clad summits, and to the north, Tuckche peak [6851 m].
Crossing French Col [(5100 m) named by Maurice Herzog’s famous French expedition of 1950] we drop into Hidden Valley, home to Nepal’s famed blue sheep and a rare miniature rhododendron. Descending via Dhampus pass, we are treated with views that reveal the massive scale of the Kali Gandaki George.
